Restaurant Sales Dip in May

Preliminary data released Monday by the Statistical Federal Office (Destatis) indicate a significant downturn in Germany’s hospitality sector during May 2025. Calendar- and seasonally adjusted real turnover decreased by 4.6 percent, while nominal turnover fell by 2.2 percent compared to the previous month, April.

Year-on-year comparisons reveal a similar trend, with real turnover declining by 4.0 percent and nominal turnover rising by a marginal 0.8 percent when compared to May 2024.

Within the hospitality sector, accommodation services, including hotels and other lodging establishments, experienced a substantial drop. Real turnover decreased by 7.0 percent and nominal turnover by 1.4 percent relative to April. Year-on-year, real turnover at these establishments fell by 4.0 percent, with nominal turnover experiencing a gain of 2.2 percent.

The foodservice segment also saw a decline, with real turnover decreasing by 3.9 percent and nominal turnover by 3.5 percent compared to April. When assessing performance against May 2024, real turnover fell by 4.9 percent, while nominal turnover was down by 0.9 percent.
