A new analysis reveals that homeowners who switch to heat pumps instead of gas heaters can experience significant savings on household budgets.
According to a recent study by comparison portal Verivox, current heating costs are approximately 41 percent lower with heat pumps compared to gas heating systems. Even less efficient heat pump models still offer a cost advantage of around 13 percent.
The study considered a standard single-family home with a yearly energy consumption of 20,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) and an average gas heating bill of €2,262. An efficient heat pump with an annual coefficient of performance (COP) of 4 requires 5,000 kWh of electricity to provide the same heating output. This translates to an average cost of €1,337 nationwide, representing a saving of €925, or 41 percent, compared to a gas heating system.
The disparity in operating costs is projected to increase in the future. This trend is primarily driven by rising carbon dioxide (CO2) prices, which are progressively increasing the cost of fossil fuels like natural gas. Conversely, homes utilizing heat pumps benefit from lower electricity network fees and concession charges.
Verivox energy expert, Thorsten Storck, emphasized that the efficiency of the system is crucial. A higher annual COP translates to lower electricity consumption and greater savings compared to fossil fuel-based systems.
Even with a less efficient heat pump – operating at a COP of 2.7 – heating costs are still approximately 13 percent (€284) lower than those associated with a gas heater. With the current average household electricity price, the necessary 7,500 kWh of electricity would cost nearly €2,000. Storck attributes reduced efficiency to factors like inadequate insulation or unsuitable radiators.
Homeowners are strongly advised to seek professional consultation before investing in a new heating system. While gas heaters often have a lower initial purchase price, heat pumps typically offer lower long-term running costs. The optimal heating solution is highly dependent on the specific building’s characteristics. Local consultations can provide tailored advice and inform residents about available state and municipal funding programs.
