The German government’s newly appointed Special Envoy for Religious Freedom, Thomas Rachel (CDU), has expressed deep concern over the widespread discrimination faced by individuals globally based on their beliefs. According to statements made to the “Rheinische Post”, Rachel highlighted that a significant majority – approximately three-quarters – of the world’s population reside in countries where their right to freedom of religion and conscience remains unprotected.
The placement of the Special Envoy’s office within the Federal Foreign Office underscores the German government’s commitment to integrating religious freedom as a key component of its foreign policy agenda. Rachel emphasized the imperative to prioritize this issue and bring it into sharper focus within international discussions.
Rachel further noted a troubling trend of religion being exploited to justify discrimination against others. He cited the Islamic State (IS) as a stark example, condemning the group’s actions and rejecting their claims of representing Islam.
The Envoy’s attention is particularly drawn to areas experiencing heightened religious tensions and violence. He specifically referenced the deadly attacks on Christian communities and the ongoing conflicts between Sunni-Islamic Bedouins and Druze populations in Syria. He also condemned recent instances of violence in Taybeh, the last remaining predominantly Christian village in the West Bank, where attacks and arson were reportedly carried out by violent Israeli settlers. Rachel stressed the need to investigate these incidents, hold perpetrators accountable and proactively prevent further escalation, warning of dire consequences if such acts go unaddressed.
