EU Targets US Industries Over Tariff Dispute

The European Commission is preparing a comprehensive list of potential tariffs on US imports should negotiations with the United States fail to reach a resolution by the end of July. A detailed overview, spanning 206 pages and recently published by the EU Trade Committee, outlines a potential response targeting goods valued at approximately €65.7 billion.

The proposed measures, if implemented, would disproportionately impact several key US industries. Manufacturers of commercial aircraft, engines and associated components – including tires and landing gear – face potential tariffs on imports totaling nearly €11 billion. Machinery producers would also be significantly affected, with tariffs potentially impacting €9.4 billion worth of goods. The US automotive sector is also in the crosshairs, with a potential €8 billion impact.

Beyond industrial goods, the EU’s counter-measures extend to agricultural imports. This includes fresh produce, alcoholic beverages such as beer, wine and whiskey and processed food items – often categorized as “food preparations” encompassing products like ketchup and sauces. While representing a considerably smaller volume than industrial targets, these agricultural imports are valued at approximately €6.3 billion.

The detailed listing of potential tariffs signals the EU’s seriousness in approaching ongoing trade discussions and underscores the potential for significant economic repercussions should a consensus not be achieved. The document provides a granular breakdown of affected goods, demonstrating the breadth of the EU’s prepared response.
