Following roughly two months of expanded border controls, the Police Union (GdP) is calling for a policy reversal from Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt of the Christian Social Union (CSU).
Andreas Roßkopf, Head of the GdP for the Federal Police, voiced his concerns in an interview with the “Rheinische Post” arguing that resources are being misallocated. Instead of staffing permanent checkpoints, he emphasized the need for increased mobile teams, strengthened cross-border collaboration and the implementation of cutting-edge technology.
Roßkopf specifically highlighted the urgency of digital data capture systems and AI-powered search capabilities, as well as the deployment of drones, mobile sensor technology, modern pursuit vehicles and joint patrols with neighboring countries.
Furthermore, the union leader expressed concerns that the static border checks are fostering a sense of regression in European integration. He criticized the measures as being “purely politically driven” impacting cross-border commuters, the flow of goods and deliveries, thousands of holidaymakers and even police personnel themselves.
