Union Dismisses Bundestag Session on Judge Election

Following the failed election for judges, the conservative Union faction is rejecting calls for an emergency session of the Bundestag to elect new Constitutional Court judges.

Sources within the Union, speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, stated that there is no pressing need for such a session, particularly given that parliament is currently in summer recess. The proposal for an emergency meeting had been put forward by the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and opposition groups.

SPD Parliamentary Secretary Dirk Wiese reiterated his call for the Union to meet with SPD candidate Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf. According to statements provided to the “Rheinische Post”, Wiese expressed that, given the allegations of plagiarism leveled against her have proven unfounded, he expects the Union to engage in discussions with Professor Brosius-Gersdorf promptly. He suggested that the constructed defamation campaign, seemingly originating from right-wing news outlets, will dissipate with such interaction.

Responding to this request, representatives from the Union acknowledged the suggestion of a meeting with Professor Brosius-Gersdorf.
