Greens Demand Corporate Seizure Climate Fight

A prominent figure within Germany’s Green Youth movement is advocating for the nationalization of several major corporations as a necessary measure in the fight against the climate crisis. Jakob Blasel, co-chair of the Green Youth, argues that companies like RWE, Leag and Thyssenkrupp, which he labels among the most environmentally damaging, should be brought under state control.

In an interview with “Der Spiegel”, Blasel stated that nationalization is the only way to ensure these companies shift away from business models he believes are detrimental to both people and the environment. He expressed a loss of faith in the companies’ willingness to act in the broader public interest, citing their prioritization of short-term profit and shareholder value.

Acknowledging that his proposal represents a departure from the current political discourse, Blasel maintained that existing climate action strategies are insufficient. He framed his suggestion not as radical in itself, but as a proportionate response to the severity of the climate crisis and global inequalities. He further emphasized a need for increased urgency and a shift in perspective within the Green party itself.

Blasel also addressed concerns about the impact on workers employed in industries reliant on fossil fuels, proposing a “status guarantee” for affected employees. This would involve ensuring job security and preserving existing benefits as they transition to positions within non-fossil-fuel sectors within the restructured companies.

Jakob Blasel has served as one of the two federal spokespersons for Green Youth, alongside Jette Nietzard, since October 2024. Green Youth represents the younger generation within the Green party and serves as a key voice in shaping the party’s policy direction.
