German Insolvency Applications Rise

Preliminary data released by the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) indicates a discernible shift in the nation’s insolvency landscape. For June 2025, the number of applications for standard insolvency proceedings rose by 2.4 percent compared to the same month in the preceding year.

It’s important to note that these statistics reflect applications that have progressed to the initial ruling stage by insolvency courts. The actual insolvency petition is frequently submitted approximately three months prior to the recorded date.

Looking back to April 2025, finalized results from local courts reveal 2,125 applications for company insolvency proceedings were registered. This represents an increase of 11.5 percent compared to April 2024.

The total claims by creditors associated with the company insolvency applications filed in April 2025 amounted to roughly €2.5 billion. This figure contrasts with the approximately €11.4 billion reported for creditor claims in April 2024. The decline in claims despite an increase in the number of insolvency applications is attributed to a higher proportion of economically significant companies filing for insolvency in April 2024 compared to April 2025.

When considering the rate per 10,000 companies, Germany experienced 6.1 company insolvencies in April 2025. The sector experiencing the highest rate of insolvency was transport and logistics, with 11.3 cases per 10,000 companies. The construction and hospitality industries followed closely, each registering 9.8 insolvencies per 10,000 companies.

Consumer insolvency applications also saw a slight increase. Destatis reported 6,328 consumer insolvency applications for April 2025, representing a 0.8 percent rise compared to April 2024.
