Calls for a thorough investigation into the procurement of face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic are growing, with a senior figure within the Social Democratic Party (SPD) advocating for complete transparency. Tim Klüssendorf, General Secretary of the SPD, emphasized the necessity of elucidating events that transpired within the Health Ministry during the crisis.
Speaking to Focus magazine, Klüssendorf stated that a rapid and comprehensive investigation is vital for the health of Germany’s democracy, particularly given the substantial sums of taxpayer money involved. He did not rule out the possibility of establishing a formal parliamentary inquiry committee.
Acknowledging that the SPD and the conservative Union parties are coalition partners, Klüssendorf underscored that the pursuit of clarity should supersede coalition interests. He highlighted the importance of maintaining public trust in institutions, especially when dealing with significant financial resources.
Recent criticisms leveled against Margaretha Sudhof, a commissioned expert and SPD member, were dismissed by Klüssendorf. He asserted that her report had comprehensively examined the facts and was free from political influence. The calls for heightened scrutiny reflect an ongoing desire to fully understand the decision-making processes surrounding pandemic-era procurement and to ensure accountability.
