A leading Social Democratic Party (SPD) politician is advocating for Germany to uphold its commitments regarding the resettlement of Afghan refugees. Derya Türk-Nachbaur, a prominent voice on foreign policy within the SPD, emphasized the party’s unified stance in an interview with the “Rheinische Post” asserting that all previously made pledges for acceptance must be honored.
According to Türk-Nachbaur, those Afghan individuals awaiting relocation have undergone extensive and rigorous vetting processes by German security agencies, multiple times and thorough in nature. She stated that there are no grounds to prevent their entry into Germany.
The call for adherence to pledges follows a recent legal decision by the Berlin Administrative Court. In an expedited hearing held Tuesday, the court mandated the issuing of visas for an Afghan woman and her family, citing previous commitments made by the German government.
Türk-Nachbaur welcomed a perceived alignment with the perspective of the Foreign Office, currently led by the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), stating, “It’s positive that the Foreign Office sees things similarly to us. Germany must remain a reliable partner”. The situation highlights the ongoing complexities of managing refugee resettlement and maintaining international commitments.
