Following reports suggesting a consensus between the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) regarding the selection of a Vice President for the Federal Constitutional Court, the SPD has issued a statement clarifying the ongoing process.
Dirk Wiese, Parliamentary Secretary of the SPD parliamentary group, in comments provided to “Welt” emphasized the high caliber of all three nominees vying for a position at the court in Karlsruhe. He affirmed that each candidate possesses exceptional legal expertise.
However, Wiese stressed that the ultimate decision regarding who will succeed Doris König as Vice President of the Federal Constitutional Court rests solely with the Bundesrat, the upper house of the German parliament. He explicitly stated that there is no pre-agreement or predetermined selection within the Bundestag regarding this appointment. The Bundesrat will exercise its sovereign authority to determine the next Vice President.
