Germany Praises Poland's Border Checks

Joint border checks initiated by Poland at the borders with Lithuania and Germany have been affirmed as a significant step in addressing irregular migration, according to German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt. The measures, commencing on Monday, represent a coordinated effort between the Polish and German governments, emphasizing a shared approach to managing migration flows.

Initial successes in disrupting human smuggling operations have already been reported. Polish authorities have confirmed the arrest of an individual attempting to illegally transport four individuals from Afghanistan across the border into Lithuania.

The implemented border controls are described as a temporary measure deemed currently necessary to facilitate a realignment of migration patterns.

However, the implementation of these intensified checks has sparked concerns among various stakeholders. The police union has voiced apprehension regarding the potential for a “ping-pong effect” where asylum seekers and those seeking protection may be repeatedly transferred between countries. Business associations have also expressed worry, citing potential disruptions to the free movement of goods and skilled workers across the border.
