Germany Seeks Talks With Poland Over Border Disputes

Following a dispute over border controls along the Polish border, a senior German parliamentarian is calling for clarifying discussions between Berlin and Warsaw. Dirk Wiese, parliamentary group secretary for the SPD in the Bundestag, emphasized the need for intensified coordination with Polish authorities.

Speaking to “Welt” television, Wiese suggested direct engagement at the highest levels, including communication from the Chancellery to the Polish President and Prime Minister. He argued that improved dialogue is crucial to address the constraints impacting cross-border traffic, especially for commuters and to seriously consider concerns raised by affected communities.

While affirming the fundamental correctness of the border controls – originally initiated by former Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) and subsequently expanded with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) – Wiese stressed the importance of understanding the situation on the ground. He acknowledged the severe impact these heightened controls are having on regional economic activity and cross-border traffic in the affected areas. The call for renewed dialogue aims to mitigate these consequences while maintaining security measures.
