Construction Union Seeks Heat Protection Pay

Discussions are underway regarding the implementation of heat-related work protections and compensation for employees across various industries in Germany, spurred by the upcoming heatwave expected next week. Anja Piel, a board member of the German Confederation of Trade Unions (DGB), has advocated for broader adoption of measures similar to those already in place for certain sectors.

Piel highlighted the existing agreement for roofers, which includes provisions for paid time off and compensation when work is impeded by extreme weather conditions. She suggested this model could serve as a framework for other industries, emphasizing the need for such protections to be negotiated within collective bargaining agreements when deemed appropriate for a specific sector.

The DGB representative underscored the responsibility of employers to safeguard employees from heat stress, noting that the demands of the workplace vary considerably. Measures should be tailored to suit environments ranging from offices to construction sites, care facilities, steel mills and production lines.

Acknowledging the increasing frequency and intensity of heatwaves due to climate change, Piel urged employers to proactively implement robust heat protection measures. She also called for increased staffing within regulatory bodies to facilitate regular and thorough inspections of workplace conditions.
