Germany Ticket Tie to Inflation Insufficient Says Minister

North Rhine-Westphalia’s Transport Minister Oliver Krischer (Greens) has expressed reservations regarding proposals from Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder (CDU) to link the price development of the Deutschlandticket to the inflation rate.

In an interview with the “Rheinische Post” on Saturday, Krischer stated that relying solely on inflation adjustments would not resolve the underlying issues. He emphasized the necessity of federal involvement to move beyond a state of ongoing temporary solutions.

While acknowledging the general consensus on linking the Deutschlandticket price to a price index in the medium term, Krischer stressed that this is not the primary concern. He highlighted the need for a long-term resolution regarding the ticket’s financing, as well as clarity on administrative and marketing aspects.

Krischer indicated that he is hopeful for progress through the process agreed upon at the Transport Ministers’ Conference, which involves collaboration between the federal government and the states.
