An explosion at a gas station on Via dei Gordiani in Rome’s Prenestino district on Friday morning resulted in injuries and property damage.
According to Italian media reports, the incident occurred shortly after 8:00 AM when a pump detached from a fuel tanker delivering to the station. A loud explosion was heard throughout many neighborhoods of the Italian capital and a thick plume of smoke was visible across a large portion of the city.
The Teano metro station on Line C was closed on the orders of authorities, according to Rome’s public transport operator Atac. At least one firefighter and several emergency personnel sustained injuries. Initial reports indicate that firefighters were initially dispatched to address a truck that had damaged a power line. The explosion occurred upon their arrival, impacting paramedics who were already on scene.
The detonation caused damage to several nearby buildings and flames reached an adjacent depot. Several pedestrians are also reported to have been injured.
