A man seeking asylum from Iraq has been on the run since June 15th after escaping from the secure transit area of Frankfurt Airport. According to reports, the individual exploited a gap in a wall, created during renovations and covered with plywood, to flee. The Federal Police are currently conducting a search.
The man had been undergoing the “airport procedure” since late January, where asylum applications are decided before the person even enters the country. The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees rejected his application within days and a subsequent urgent appeal to the administrative court was unsuccessful.
Due to the individual lacking a passport, his return to Iraq was initially prevented. A court ordered him to remain in the transit area of Frankfurt Airport pending further action. The regional authorities responsible for his accommodation have stated they are reviewing the incident and have since implemented structural improvements and increased surveillance measures within the facility.
