Heatwave Slumps Ice Cream Sales

Recent extreme heat across Italy is impacting ice cream sales, according to the Verband der italienischen Speiseeishersteller in Deutschland (Uniteis).

Uniteis spokesperson Annalisa Carnio told the Rheinische Post that consumer preference shifts with rising temperatures. “Above 30 degrees Celsius, people primarily seek hydration. Temperatures around 25 or 26 degrees are more favorable for ice cream sales”. She added that hotter weather generally leads to increased demand for water and soft drinks over ice cream. The association expressed hope for more moderate weather conditions.

Carnio also addressed the upcoming increase in the minimum wage next year, stating it presents a challenge for the industry. Labor costs represent approximately one-third of the expenses for an ice cream parlor, according to Uniteis. The association noted that ice cream prices have seen minimal increases this season compared to the previous year, with a conscious effort made to maintain affordability.
