SC Freiburg Bolsters Squad with Return of Versatile Winger Philipp Treu

SC Freiburg has announced the acquisition of 24-year-old winger Philipp Treu, marking a return for the player to his former club. The announcement, made on Monday, signals a strengthening of Freiburg’s squad ahead of the upcoming season.

Treu, originally from Heidelberg, began his footballing education within Freiburg’s youth academy. He was an integral part of the U19 team that secured victory in the DFB Junior Cup in 2018 and subsequently progressed to the U23 squad in 2019, contributing to their promotion to the 3. Liga in 2021.

Throughout his time with Freiburg’s reserve team, Treu featured in a total of 68 competitive matches. Following a runner-up finish in the regional league in 2023, he transferred to FC St. Pauli in the 2. Bundesliga. His time with the northern German side proved highly successful, leading to an immediate promotion to the Bundesliga, where he appeared in 35 matches during the most recent campaign.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the move, Treu stated he appreciated the developmental experience he gained at St. Pauli and is eager to take the next step in his career with Freiburg. He specifically highlighted his anticipation for participation in the Bundesliga and the club’s Europa League competitions.

Contract details have not been disclosed. Treu will wear the number 29 jersey for SC Freiburg.
