Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz Praises Cooperation with Austria on Border Control
In a meeting with his Austrian counterpart, Christian Stocker, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed gratitude for the cooperation between the two countries on their shared border. Merz commended the close coordination on border controls, stating that it is “well-timed and well-coordinated” in regards to the controls between Germany and Austria. Stocker also echoed a sense of good understanding, describing the relationship as “good”.
The expanded border controls and rejections ordered by Germany’s Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt had previously caused tensions with neighboring countries, particularly the question of the legal basis for the minister’s decisions, which led to a dispute.
In addition, Merz advocated for a joint energy infrastructure with Austria, highlighting the progress that has been made in this area. “A lot has been possible between Germany and Austria” the CDU leader said, describing Austria as an “important trading partner”. The shared language, he noted, makes many things easier.
