SPD Demands International Law in the Middle East

The Social Democratic Party of Germany has called on Israel to respect international law in the wake of ongoing attacks on Gaza and Iran. In a draft resolution to be discussed at the party’s upcoming federal convention, the SPD emphasizes the importance of upholding the principles of international law and ending violence.

The party urges all diplomatic efforts to be made to preserve the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Iran and to prevent further suffering. The situation in Gaza, where civilian populations are bearing the brunt of the conflict, is of particular concern. The SPD demands an end to the suffering of the civilian population and emphasizes the need for humanitarian aid to be delivered to the region.

The party also highlights the need for Israel to adhere to the principles of international law, particularly in its use of weapons. The SPD’s draft resolution stresses that German arms exports to Israel must be conditional on their not being used for actions that violate international law. Israel has rejected allegations that its actions in Gaza and Iran violate international law.

The SPD acknowledges Israel’s right to self-defense, but emphasizes the need for that right to be exercised in a responsible and proportionate manner. The party also criticizes the Israeli government’s handling of the humanitarian situation in Gaza, calling for the delivery of aid and the protection of civilians.

Furthermore, the SPD expresses concern over the annexation of territories, forced displacement and the construction of settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, which it regards as violating international law. In its assessment of the situation, the party does not accept Israel’s justification for the attack on Iran, stating that while Israel has a right to self-defense, it must also respect the principles of international law.
