Germany’s Green Party Leader Urges Minimum Wage of 15 Euros
Germany’s Green Party leader, Felix Banaszak, has called for a minimum wage of 15 euros, regardless of the recommendation of the minimum wage commission. In an interview with the Funke-Mediengruppe, Banaszak emphasized that the commission should base its decision on 60 percent of the median salary. He urged the Social Democratic Party (SPD) to adopt this proposal.
The Green Party leader argued that the original goal of the minimum wage law was to ensure a living wage and combat poverty and warned that the growing number of people having to top up their income with additional work should serve as a warning. Banaszak also dismissed the idea of making an exception to the minimum wage for seasonal workers, calling it “unfair”. The minimum wage commission, comprising representatives of the trade unions, is expected to announce its recommendation on Friday morning.
