Social Welfare Association Expresses Disappointment Over Delay in Extended Maternity Pension
The German Social Welfare Association (SoVD) has expressed its disappointment at the announcement that the extended maternity pension will not be paid out until at least 2028.
According to Michaela Engelmeier, the association’s chair, the delay in the maternity pension had already been anticipated. However, the association now needs to start and concretize the planning in light of the introduction of the new system in 2028.
The association welcomes the government’s proposal to raise the number of child-rearing years to three pension points, regardless of the birth year of the children, for all. Engelmeier describes the adjustment as a “long-overdue step towards greater fairness.” It is a matter of recognizing life’s achievements, which deserve respect. The current rule, where mothers of children born before 1992 receive only 2.5 pension points, would mean a reduction of around 20 euros per month in pension for the affected individuals. Engelmeier emphasizes that the costs should be covered from the regular federal budget and not by the contributions of the insured.
