German politician Omid Nouripour, the Vice President of the German Bundestag, has expressed concerns over the Iranian regime’s potential backlash against opposition groups following the military strikes on the country’s nuclear program.
In an interview with the news agency “Welt”, Nouripour stated that the regime’s actions demonstrate that a solely military solution will not lead to success. He pointed out that the regime has not released political prisoners injured in the bombing of the Evin Prison in Tehran, instead, they are being secretly transferred to unknown locations, which is extremely concerning.
According to Nouripour, the regime is now using the cover of the ongoing military conflicts to arrest and, in some cases, execute opposition figures, in an attempt to show its ability to act despite the significant damage it has suffered. He emphasized that this development must be taken into consideration when evaluating the effectiveness of the military strikes, as well as the implications for the freedom-loving opposition in Iran.
Nouripour also expressed skepticism over the immediate impact of the military strikes, stating that it is too early to assess the outcome and that a final judgment should be made once the full extent of the damage is known.
Instead of relying solely on military action, Nouripour suggested that the time is now ripe for diplomatic efforts, regardless of whether it takes a few months, five years, or longer, as the true extent of the damage beneath the surface in Iran is unknown. He emphasized that a nuclear Iran would pose a threat to global peace and that the region’s partners, including Gulf states and others, must be involved in finding a solution, not just Israel.
Ultimately, Nouripour believes that the current military action has shown that a lasting solution can only be achieved through a negotiated settlement, requiring a combination of diplomacy and other forms of pressure.
