Merz's Popularity Plummets as AfD and Left Party Surge

According to the latest “Trendbarometer” survey conducted by Forsa for RTL and ntv, the CDU/CSU has maintained its previous support level of 28 percent. The AfD has gained one percentage point, reaching 24 percent, while the SPD and the Greens have remained steady at 14 and 11 percent, respectively.

The Left Party has gained one percentage point, now standing at 11 percent and the Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) and the Free Democratic Party (FDP) have both lost one percentage point, now at three and two percent, respectively. Other parties have remained stable at six percent.

When it comes to the perception of political competence, the CDU/CSU remains stable at 27 percent, with the AfD increasing by one percentage point to 11 percent. The SPD has decreased by one percentage point to six percent, while the Greens and the Left Party have remained unchanged at six and five percent, respectively. Forty-three percent of respondents do not trust any party to effectively address the country’s problems.

The economic sentiment has slightly deteriorated, with 26 percent of respondents expecting an improvement in the economic situation, a three-percentage-point decrease from the previous week. Forty-nine percent anticipate a deterioration, a two-percentage-point increase and 24 percent expect no change, a one-percentage-point increase.

The satisfaction with the work of Chancellor Friedrich Merz remains relatively constant, with 42 percent of respondents being satisfied with his performance, a one-percentage-point decrease and 51 percent being dissatisfied, a two-percentage-point increase. Merz’s approval ratings are particularly high among CDU/CSU and SPD supporters, at 82 and 54 percent, respectively, while Green and Left Party supporters have a lower approval rate of 39 and 19 percent, respectively and AfD supporters have a low approval rate of six percent.
