A German Man, 40, Faces Charges of Murder and Attempted Murder in Connection with a Suspected Rampage in Mannheim

The Mannheim public prosecutor’s office has filed charges against a 40-year-old German man in connection with a suspected rampage on Rosenmontag, according to a statement to the Mannheimer Morgen on Monday. The charges include murder and attempted murder.

The alleged events unfolded on the morning of Rosenmontag, when the 40-year-old man allegedly drove his vehicle at a speed of between 40 and 50 kilometers per hour into the pedestrian zone in the Friedrichsring near the Wasserturm, with the intention of running over an unspecified number of pedestrians and causing their deaths.

The investigation has found no evidence of a political motive. The man, who has been in custody, has so far not commented on the charges.

The prosecutor’s office has concluded that the 40-year-old man has been suffering from a long-term mental illness and that, at the time of the alleged crimes, he may have been diminished in his capacity to be held accountable. The Mannheim regional court will now decide on the admissibility of the charges and the man remains in pre-trial detention.
