A German Social Democratic Party (SPD) faction is considering the introduction of a “social leasing” model for electric vehicles, inspired by the French approach. This concept, according to Jakob Blankenburg, the SPD’s climate policy spokesperson, would cater to individuals who cannot afford a 100,000-euro electric car.
The subsidized leasing program would focus on low-income groups and compact electric vehicles, with German manufacturers also expected to participate, as they have primarily focused on larger models so far. The idea is to make electric cars more accessible to a broader audience.
France introduced a similar “social leasing” program in 2024, with the cheapest rate starting at 54 euros without insurance. The German government is currently working on a new electric vehicle incentive, following the announcement of a special depreciation for companies on electric cars by Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil.
