German Left-Wing Party Calls for Drastic Measures Against Israel, Isolation on International Stage
The leadership of the German party, the Left of the West (BSW), is pushing for a significant reduction in Germany’s partnership with Israel and its international isolation. This is according to a recent email sent by the party’s top officials, including Chair Sahra Wagenknecht, Vice-Chair Amira Mohamed Ali and General Secretary Christian Leye, to the rest of the federal board, which was reported by the Welt newspaper.
The party’s leadership is seeking approval from its colleagues for a resolution that would be a significant break with the principle of ensuring Israel’s security, which has been a commitment of all German governments since 2008. The resolution, titled “Stop the illegal attack war on Iran – End German weapons deliveries to Israel!”, includes a range of demands, including the immediate stop of all weapons deliveries to Israel, an initiative by the German government in the NATO council to end military and intelligence cooperation with Israel, a suspension of the association agreement between the European Union and Israel and an initiative by the German government before the International Criminal Court to prosecute Israeli war crimes, such as attacks on nuclear facilities and television stations in Iran.
The party’s leadership, which includes the chair, vice-chairs, general secretary and other high-ranking officials, is likely to have the support of the majority of the federal board, given the strong influence of Chair Wagenknecht over the party. Another demand is the prohibition of the use of US military bases in Germany for logistical or military support of the Israeli attack war. In reference to Gaza, Wagenknecht and Mohamed Ali see a “genocide of the Palestinian population”.
