Environmental Agency Warns of Severe Drought Consequences in Germany
The German Environment Agency (UBA) has issued a warning about the escalating drought, which is exacerbating water scarcity and posing a severe threat to agriculture, forests and the economy.
According to UBA President Dirk Messner, the risk of forest fires is already high in many regions, particularly in central Germany. However, the situation is most alarming for the agricultural sector, as prolonged water scarcity puts soil and crops under stress, threatening harvests and food security.
Messner emphasized the urgent need for reliable water strategies in the agricultural sector and called for the public to adopt a more water-conscious approach. “Water is no longer a given” he said, adding that this may lead to restrictions in private water use, such as in gardening or filling swimming pools.
