German Union’s Foreign Policy Spokesman Urges G7 Unity Ahead of Summit
The German Union’s foreign policy spokesman, Jürgen Hardt, has called for unity among the G7 nations, particularly in the face of the upcoming G7 summit. In an interview with Politico, Hardt emphasized the need for the CDU’s leader, Friedrich Merz, to take a clear stance in support of free trade and the Ukraine and to impose new sanctions on Russia.
Hardt expressed optimism about the possibility of a common line with US President Donald Trump on issues such as the Middle East conflict and trade, stating, “We hope that there will be a common understanding among the G7 on the negotiation of trade disputes and trade conflicts – no tariffs, no extra taxes, that’s important to us.”
Regarding the Middle East, Hardt showed understanding for Israel’s military actions, despite the Union’s previous reservations. He stated, “We would have advised the Israelis not to solve the issue militarily, but now that they have decided on this risky path, we can only hope that it will be successful and that Iran’s ability to build a bomb will be reversed.”
Germany, according to Hardt, must accept the actions of the Israeli government, saying, “I think we need to deal with the fact that Israel is doing what it’s doing.” He noted that the risk-taking course of the Israeli government might, in fact, lead to the destruction of Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
Hardt also saw opportunities for new talks with Iran, citing a changed environment, where the Iranian government might be more willing to negotiate due to the knowledge that its nuclear program cannot be implemented, as Israel is capable of militarily preventing it. This comes after the recent cancellation of a planned meeting between the US and Iran, following the Israeli attack.
