Deadly Virus Spreads to Germany's Doorstep!

A Dead Wild Boar in North-Rhine Westphalia Tests Positive for African Swine Fever

In the municipality of Kirchhundem, in the Olpe district of North-Rhine Westphalia, a dead wild boar has been found to test positive for African Swine Fever (ASF) in initial tests. The North-Rhine Westphalia Ministry of Agriculture announced this on Friday. A final confirmation from the Friedrich Loeffler Institute is still pending.

While this is a single case, preventive measures have already been taken to prevent the possible spread of the animal disease. The Olpe district, the Consumer Protection Authority and the Ministry of Agriculture are working closely together in this effort.

For humans, the ASF virus is not a threat, as it only affects domestic and wild pigs, with an infection almost always being fatal. If the suspected case is confirmed, the disease is intended to be contained within a limited area.
