German Intelligence Warns of Escalating Russian Espionage in Germany

The Deputy President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Sinan Selen, has expressed concerns over the increasingly open and aggressive tactics employed by Russian intelligence services in Germany. In an interview with the Rheinische Post, Selen stated that Russian intelligence agencies are adapting their methods to ensure the success of their operations, often by circumventing the defenses of security authorities.

Moreover, Selen noted that Russian intelligence services are no longer prioritizing the “deniability” of their actions, instead focusing on operational success. Deniability, a crucial capability for intelligence agencies, refers to the ability to maintain anonymity.

The BfV official emphasized that the situation is becoming increasingly complex, with a continuous escalation of the conflict with Russian intelligence services over the past few years. He expects to see ongoing adjustments to the situation and operations in response to the evolving threat.

Selen’s remarks highlight the long-term nature of the conflict with Russian intelligence services, underscoring the need for a sustained and coordinated response from German security authorities.
