Can Merz's Government Save the West?

Economic Expert Veronika Grimm Assesses First Weeks of German Government Under Chancellor Friedrich Merz

Professor Veronika Grimm of the “Bild” has drawn a mixed assessment of the first weeks of the government under Chancellor Friedrich Merz of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). While Merz has made significant efforts to build international alliances and set a new tone in foreign policy, Grimm believes that more is needed to strengthen Europe’s economic and security standing.

Grimm emphasized the importance of unity and a better mood, but noted that this would not be enough on its own. Europe needs to strengthen its economic and security presence, particularly in relation to the United States, to become a more attractive partner. The relative power of the West is declining due to the rapid economic growth of emerging economies like China, Grimm pointed out, citing the recognition of this trend by former US President Donald Trump.

According to Grimm, Europe must take its own measures, in its own interest, to maintain its influence. This would also strengthen the alliance with the United States. The economist and Siemens Energy supervisory board member further called for the abolition of regulatory obstacles to innovation, tax cuts and a reduction in labor costs and the flexibilization of the labor market in Germany, stating that the current measures in the coalition agreement are insufficient.
