Berlin’s Mayor Kai Wegner Seeks to Attract US Researchers Amid US Crackdown on Harvard

Berlin’s Mayor, Kai Wegner, has announced plans to attract more US researchers to the city, in response to the US government’s hard stance on the elite University of Harvard. “Berlin is the city of freedom” Wegner told the Handelsblatt, emphasizing that all freedom-loving scientists are welcome in the city. He expressed enthusiasm for any individual who contributes to making Berlin a top innovation hub.

The Berlin state government is considering setting up a fund to specifically support researchers, according to Wegner. “The chance is there to offer them a perspective in Berlin” the CDU politician said, acknowledging that the city is currently facing a tight budget. However, he emphasized that it is essential to move quickly.

In addition, the Berlin Senate is pushing forward with the implementation of a major project for research and technology, Wegner said. The city is developing the “Urban Tech Republic” on the former Tegel airport site, with the Berlin University of Applied Sciences set to be the anchor tenant. Many interested parties, including start-ups, science and research institutions, have already expressed interest, Wegner noted.

The mayor also intends to utilize the special federal fund for investments in science and research. Preliminary calculations suggest that Berlin could expect around five billion euros in funding. “This would be a huge help” Wegner said, highlighting the potential benefits for the city’s scientific community.
