German Minister of State Daniel Günther Advocates for Social Media Ban for Minors
In a recent interview with the German newspaper “Bild am Sonntag”, Schleswig-Holstein’s Minister of State Daniel Günther (CDU) expressed his strong support for a ban on social media platforms, including TikTok, Instagram and Facebook, for individuals under the age of 16. Günther believes that the state has neglected its protective function in the past and it is high time for a paradigm shift to ensure that minors can grow up free from the influence of social media in society.
Günther’s proposal, which will be voted on by the state’s party conference on June 17, aims to ban social media for children and young people and increase control over the platforms as a whole. The minister cites the negative effects of social media on the youth and society, stating that the platforms can bring children into contact with violent, sexualized and false content, overwhelming them and making it impossible for parents to monitor their online activities.
