In a recent interview with the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung”, Matthias Miersch, the leader of the Social Democratic Party’s parliamentary faction, expressed his skepticism about the effectiveness of a directive by the Interior Minister, Alexander Dobrindt, to turn back asylum seekers at the borders.
Miersch believes that the practice of summarily rejecting asylum seekers will no longer be feasible, as the courts will likely intervene to stop it. He also understands Chancellor Angela Merkel’s perspective, that the recent decision by the Berlin Administrative Court warrants a re-examination of the practice in light of this new development and expects this to happen.
Miersch reaffirmed his stance, previously expressed before the coalition talks, that the rejection of asylum seekers is a “national solution” and “poison” for Germany and he remains committed to this view.
