German Government Remains Vague on New Economic Exchange with the US

Despite a recent meeting between the US President and the German Chancellor, the German government has yet to provide specific details on the newly announced economic exchange agreement between the two nations.

A spokesperson for the German government acknowledged the agreement as a significant and concrete outcome of the meeting, but remained vague on the details of the arrangement. The agreement, according to the spokesperson, is aimed at enhancing the economic ties between Germany and the US, with a wide range of topics to be discussed.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who met with the US President in Washington, had earlier stated that an “intense trade policy cooperation” had been agreed upon between the White House and the German Chancellor’s office, with individuals already named to lead the discussions. However, the government spokesperson declined to reveal the identities of those individuals and the level of the exchange.

Reports suggest that a possible direct “deal” between the US and Germany was discussed in phone calls between the two leaders prior to the meeting in Washington. However, Chancellor Merz had to remind the US President that such a deal is not feasible, as the EU is responsible for trade policy.
