Germany's Shame: Green Party Demands Justice for Illegally Extradited Activist

German Activist’s Detention in Hungary Sparks Calls for Return to Germany

The German government is being urged to intervene and secure the return of Maja T., a non-binary activist, who was wrongfully deported from Germany to Hungary in 2024. Helge Limburg, the right-wing spokesperson of the Green Party’s parliamentary faction, has called on the federal government to take immediate action to ensure T.’s return to Germany or at the very least, to fight for humane detention conditions in Hungary.

T. was deported to Hungary, where they are facing charges of assaulting neo-Nazis with sticks. The activist has denied any wrongdoing, describing the trial as politically motivated. The German Federal Constitutional Court later declared the extradition as unlawful.

Critics have repeatedly raised concerns about the detention conditions in Hungary and there are also doubts about the fairness of the trial T. is facing. The situation has sparked renewed calls for Germany to cease all further extraditions to Hungary, with Limburg stating, “It must be clear that Germany can no longer extradite anyone to Hungary. Not Zaid A. either, who is also a German citizen and a suspect in the same case.
