Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger Outlines Plans to Accelerate State Projects and Digital Services

Germany’s Federal Minister of Digital Affairs, Karsten Wildberger, has emphasized the need to speed up state projects and digital services, citing the importance of time as a controllable factor in public tenders. In an interview with the Frankfurt Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, Wildberger criticized the slow pace of fiber-optic and mobile network expansion, attributing the delay to project management issues within companies.

Wildberger has also announced plans to launch a digital wallet, dubbed the “digital identity” by the first quarter of 2027. The initiative aims to securely store and make available essential documents, such as birth certificates, diplomas and ID cards, on smartphones, allowing citizens to access them at any time and across the European Union.

The digital minister’s vision for the future of digital services in Germany involves a single, cloud-based and secure solution for administrative tasks, with a user-friendly interface and a standardized process for each service. According to Wildberger, this would eliminate the need for different procedures in various municipalities, making it easier for citizens to access digital services.
