Söder's Surprising Offer to Harvard

German Chancellor’s US Visit Raises Questions, Bavarian Minister Says

Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder, a member of the Christian Social Union (CSU), is not envious of the meeting between German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and US President Donald Trump at the White House. Söder expressed his relief in an interview with RTL and ntv, stating that he is glad he does not have to attend such a meeting, considering it a unique event.

Historically, meetings between German leaders and US presidents were characterized by a sense of friendship, aimed at confirming shared goals and interests. Söder advised Merz to be open to the unexpected during his meeting with Trump, saying that it is crucial to maintain a relationship with the US president, regardless of personal differences.

Söder believes that Merz, who has an American background and is well-experienced, will have a successful meeting. The Bavarian Minister-President emphasized the importance of the US as Germany’s closest and most vital ally outside of Europe, despite the current disagreements.

In a surprising remark, Söder expressed a willingness to welcome students who may be affected by the recent decision to revoke the Harvard University visa, to study in Germany, particularly in Bavaria. He believes that the region has the necessary infrastructure to accommodate a “Harvard in exile” and offered the idea to the federal government, saying, “We would be happy to host this ex-campus for Harvard in Bavaria immediately.
