Can the Chancellor's US Visit Revive the Transatlantic Bond?

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is set to visit the United States, with the German government’s foreign policy spokesperson, Jürgen Hardt, expecting a “successful” trip. Hardt, a member of the CDU, believes the Chancellor’s efforts to strengthen European defense have laid the groundwork for a successful visit.

According to Hardt, Chancellor Merz is strategically building his transatlantic relationships, as evident in his phone calls and frequent text messages with US President Donald Trump, as well as the recent visit of the German Foreign Minister, Wadephul, to the United States. The US government has already shown its appreciation for Merz’s engagement, allowing him to stay at the Blair House guest residence, Hardt noted.

The visit is also expected to yield progress on the Ukraine issue, with Hardt hoping for further steps towards supporting the country. He believes that President Putin’s drone terror is a strong argument for Trump, who only wants peace and can only achieve it through a strong Ukraine. Hardt anticipates the strengthening of the transatlantic bond, which has recently gained momentum.
