At least 30 dead after bus falls off in Kenya.
At least 30 people have died after a bus fell off a bridge in Kenya.
The bus plunged off the Nithi Bridge and into a river in Meru town, on the main highway from the capital, Nairobi.
A senior police official has said that the bus “must have had a brake failure because it was at a very high speed” when it suffered the accident.
For the “terrible” accident, district commissioner Nobert Komora described the bridge as “notorious”.
Footage from the aftermath shows the bus on the riverbank, in a state of disrepair, and rescue workers surveying the scene.
A rescue worker said the death toll was likely to continue to rise, with several people still in hospital.
The accident happened around 6.30pm on Sunday and Red Cross officials said a rescue operation was suspended after nightfall.
The accident is the latest in a series of deadly accidents in Kenya, where roads are narrow and police blame drivers for speeding.
