Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk Announces Vote of Confidence in Parliament

In a televised address on Monday evening, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tuk announced his intention to submit a motion of confidence in the parliament, a move that comes in the wake of his party’s candidate’s defeat in the presidential election on Sunday.

Rafał Trzaskowski, the liberal mayor of Warsaw, who was backed by Tusk’s governing coalition, lost the election by a narrow margin to Karol Nawrocki, a right-conservative candidate from the nationalist PiS party. Trzaskowski had led in the polls for weeks, only to lose by a mere two percentage points. The defeat marks a setback for Tusk’s government, which took office in late 2023.

Nawrocki’s presidency could not only block key government decisions but also be seen as a public vote of no confidence in Tusk and his government. The prospect of growing tensions has sparked speculation in Poland about the possibility of early elections, although the next regular polls are not due until 2027.
