German Internet Users Feel Overwhelmed by Media, Lack Digital Literacy

According to a recent survey conducted by the German IT industry association Bitkom, a significant number of German internet users feel overwhelmed by the media and lack digital literacy. The survey, which polled 1,003 individuals aged 16 and above, found that the average grade for digital media competence is a mere 3.1 out of 5.

Age plays a significant factor in the level of digital media competence, with younger respondents showing more confidence. Those aged 16 to 29 gave themselves a grade of 2.5, while the 30 to 49 age group scored an average of 2.9. The 50 to 64 age group scored a 3.2, the 65 to 74 age group a 3.8 and the 75 and above age group a 4.1, indicating a significant improvement with age.

The survey revealed a lack of digital media competence in many areas, including the ability to identify misinformation online. Only 26 percent of respondents felt confident in recognizing false information, with the 16 to 29 age group showing a slightly higher level of confidence at 32 percent and the 75 and above age group at just 7 percent. Furthermore, only 17 percent of respondents knew how to verify the authenticity of images and videos, with the 16 to 29 age group at 22 percent and the 75 and above age group at 11 percent.

The survey also found that only 44 percent of respondents regularly verify information online before sharing it, with the 16 to 29 age group at 48 percent and the 75 and above age group at 36 percent. Moreover, 52 percent of respondents reported having fallen for a deepfake at least once and 57 percent have mistaken an advertisement for a regular report or article.
