US Sees Berlin's Shift from 'Freeloader' to 'Defensive Powerhouse'

A shift in the US perspective on Germany has been sparked by the commitments to significantly higher defense spending, according to General Inspector Carsten Breuer.

In a recent interview with the news magazine “Der Spiegel”, Breuer stated that Washington now perceives Germany as having a genuine understanding of the US security policy, no longer being a mere follower. The new German government had recently announced its plan to invest a total of five percent of the country’s economic output in the Bundeswehr and other “defence-related expenditures” by 2032.

Breuer emphasized that the German commitments have made a difference in the US, citing his recent meetings with General Dan Caine, the new Chief of Staff of the US military. Following these encounters, Breuer expressed optimism that the US will maintain its military presence in Germany. He noted that the announced review of global troop deployments is a normal procedure, but saw no indication that the US will withdraw from Germany.
