Germany Sees Record Number of Refugees, Data Reveals

According to the latest figures from the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Germany is now home to a record number of refugees, with approximately 3.45 million registered asylum seekers as of the end of 2024. This information was provided in response to a parliamentary inquiry by Left Party MP Clara Bünger, which was reported by the Süddeutsche Zeitung.

Notably, over a third of these refugees arrived in Germany in the past three years, fleeing the Russian invasion of Ukraine. However, despite the record numbers, there is no indication of an acute crisis, as the majority of these individuals have been living in the country for years, with some even decades. The influx of new arrivals in 2024 was significantly lower than in previous years.

As of New Year’s Eve 2024, the number of registered refugees in Germany had increased by around 124,000 compared to the previous year, a far cry from the 270,000 increase in 2023 and the 1.2 million surge in the year before the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
