MIGRATION MELTDOWN: Coalition's Plans for Chaos at the Borders?

German Greens Criticize Coalition’s Migration Policy Proposals Ahead of Cabinet Meeting

The German Green Party has sharply criticized the migration policy proposals of the ruling coalition, consisting of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD), in a statement to the Rheinische Post on Monday.

Grüne party leader Felix Banaszak accused the coalition of presenting “false and short-sighted” migration policy initiatives, stating that instead of constructive solutions for a modern immigration society, the proposals only offer “reactive symbolism.”

Banaszak criticized the plan to stop family reunification, saying it undermines the integration of those already in the country and goes against Christian values, which the CDU often invokes. He also condemned the expansion of border controls within the European Union, describing it as a “blind flight” that undermines European and international credibility and solidarity and the planned regression in citizenship law, which raises doubts about the goal of integration.

The Grüne leader questioned the SPD’s commitment to the coalition, asking if the party is still aware of its role. He accused CDU leader Friedrich Merz of being willing to jeopardize the foundations of the rule of law and the European asylum system with “bare symbolism.”

The German cabinet is set to discuss the migration policy proposals from the black-red coalition agreement, including the suspension of family reunification for so-called subsidiary protection beneficiaries, at its meeting on Wednesday.
