Union Gains, AfD Falls, as Germany's Political Landscape Shifts

According to a new survey by the Insa research institute, the approval of the Union is increasing, while the AfD’s popularity is decreasing. The so-called “Sunday Trend” shows that 27 percent of respondents would vote for CDU and CSU, a one-point increase from the previous week and the best result for the Union in two months.

The AfD, on the other hand, lost one percentage point and fell back to 24 percent. There was no change in the Sunday Trend for SPD (16 percent), the Greens (11 percent), the Left (10 percent) and the BSW (4 percent). The FDP improved by one percentage point to 4 percent, while the “Others” lost one point (4 percent).

Moreover, more citizens (31 percent) are satisfied with the work of Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), an eight-percentage-point increase since his inauguration. 47 percent (minus two percentage points) are dissatisfied with Merz, according to the survey and 22 percent (minus six percentage points) are undecided or made no statement.

The government as a whole is also showing an improvement, with 34 percent (plus five percentage points) being satisfied with the work of CDU, CSU and SPD. 44 percent (minus two percentage points) are dissatisfied and 22 percent (minus three percentage points) made no statement.

Insa’s chief, Hermann Binkert, told the Bild am Sonntag, “The rising values for the Union fit with the rising approval for the black-red federal government and the Chancellor. Everything is still on a very low level, but for the first time since taking office, there is a positive trend.”

For the Sunday Trend, Insa surveyed 1,198 people from May 19 to 23, 2025, asking the question, “If there were a federal election tomorrow, how would you vote?” For the survey on satisfaction with the Chancellor, 1,003 people were surveyed from May 22 to 23, 2025, with the questions, “Overall, are you satisfied with the work of Friedrich Merz as Chancellor? Overall, are you satisfied with the work of the current federal government (CDU/CSU, SPD)?
