German authorities are urging a broader expansion of knife-free zones in the country, in response to a recent surge in violent attacks committed by young individuals. The head of the Federal Union of German Police, Dirk Peglow, emphasized the need for a more comprehensive approach to addressing the issue, stating that the fight against knife violence is not solely the responsibility of law enforcement.
Peglow stressed that the state must engage more actively with young people, focusing on prevention and education in schools, sports clubs and youth centers. He also highlighted the importance of raising awareness in refugee shelters, emphasizing that carrying a knife in Germany is not necessary for self-defense.
The police, administrative offices and therapy centers must work together to combat young perpetrators, forming network partnerships to share information and best practices, according to Peglow. The recent cases of knife violence, including incidents involving children as young as 11 and 13, have raised concerns and prompted the renewed call for action.
