German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil Remains Optimistic on EU-US Tariffs
Despite recent statements from US President Donald Trump, German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil remains committed to reaching a compromise with the United States on high EU tariffs. In an interview with the Rheinische Post, Klingbeil emphasized the urgency of the tariff issue, stating, “The question of tariff policy is very pressing.” He has scheduled a meeting with his US counterpart, Scott Bessent and plans to visit Washington soon.
Notwithstanding the provocations, Klingbeil believes that the US side is also under immense pressure. “The US tariffs threaten businesses and jobs on both sides of the Atlantic” he said, citing signals from conversations he had during the G7 summit in Canada. The minister has also announced an upcoming trip to the United States this summer, at the invitation of US Finance Minister Scott Bessent.
